The Expression of Movement in Martial Arts

When entering into a martial arts training hall, dojo, our attention is captured by the specific equipment, which is generically called kimono.

Also known as gi (Judo-gi, Karate-gi, etc.), the kimono used in the practice of martial arts determines a specific way of movement and a different coordination, comparing to the European sports. The art of making these equipments is obtained after many years of practice.

There is a strong connection between the specific movement in the martial arts and how a kimono is made.

Basically, the traditional Japanese cloths are made from rectangular fabrics sewn together, rapped around the body and fastened with strings or belts called "obi". In order for these clothing not to loosen on their body, people avoided excessive movement.

This stands on the very basic of movement in the Japanese martial arts.
