Stretching and Flexibility in Martial Arts

The master Gighin Funakoshi, the founder of the Shotokan Karate-Do style, has associated directly martial arts to the university study in order to underline the connection with a certain cultural area, a millenary culture of great prestige and an intellectual way of study.
The work "Stretching and Flexibility in Martial Arts" is directed on the same path, being complementary to the precedent courses: "Methods of Training for Shotokan Karate, Volume I and II", "Shotokan Kata" and so on.

Because the concept of flexibility is more and more neglected in martial arts, in favor of force and empiric pragmatism, and the principles of scientific stretching are practically unknown, we have presented in this book some karate techniques, starting from methodical and anatomical principles, within a background of a basic preparation in gymnastics.

This work gathers more than 280 photographs and promotes the study of martial arts as an university discipline, which is based on pedagogy, scientific research and methodics.

In this way there are created the premises of a scientific and systematic study for the Martial Arts and we have an evidence of the methods and techniques used by an appropriate development of the basic principles in Karate Do. Therefore a coherent system might be created based on adequate pedagogy in order to have a comprehensive and rewarding study at university level.
